SPRING 2010 INSTALLATION BLOOPER CONTEST

Every season we post a photo illustrating the importance of including Construction Administration in the Engineering scope of work. Even small, seemingly unimportant installation deficiencies can cause poor system performance, increased maintenance, or reduced equipment longevity.

By correctly identify the installation blooper, you are automatically entered to win a $100 Shell Oil Gas Card. Drawing will be held May 21, 2010, and past winners are eligible to win again.

Which response best identifies the installation blooper in the photo?

Since piping is inherently rigid and the water in the pipe keeps it from buckling, risers do not really need to be supported especially where it is hard to install supports.

Pipe risers can be considered as columns and only need support if there is some other support nearby that can be used conveniently.
If you run out of steel during the installation, supporting a riser from one side is better than not supporting it at all.

Pipe risers, like any other section of pipe, must be properly supported at regular intervals and must meet (or exceed) the requirements of the applicable code. Improperly or inadequately supported piping is subject to additional stress and could potentially fail. Support of pipe risers is especially important in seismic zones. If there are any concerns regarding the support of piping systems, a structural engineer should be consulted.
