AUGUST 2006 INSTALLATION BLOOPER

For a closer look, click on the photo below (bottom left) to see the August installation blooper.

The possible responses are listed below, with the correct reponse in bold.

What a mess. There are too many issues to address.

The wooden support structure is not large enough for the equipment it supports and does not provide safe access to the condensing units for maintenance.

The condensing units are too close together and do not have adequate space for free air flow. Two of the units are installed with the air intake side up against the wall. This can result in severely reduced cooling capacity and a significantly shorter equipment life.

Bolting a disconnect switch to a transformer is not good practice since vibration from the transformer can loosen wire and hardware connections in the disconnect switch. Also, transformers require a minimum of 4 or 6 inches of clearance to any obstruction to provide adequate air flow for cooling. Installing a transformer against a wall and allowing plants to obstruct ventilation openings will inhibit proper cooling of the transformer.

Any equipment located adjacent to a drive aisle or parking area should be protected by barriers (bollards or guard rails) capable of stopping vehicles in order to protect vehicle passengers as well as the equipment (the 1-1/2 inch pipe in the photo is definitely not up to that task).

ALL OF THE ABOVE.
