SPRING 2008 INSTALLATION BLOOPER

For a closer look, click on the photo below (bottom left) to see the Spring 2008 installation blooper.

The possible responses are listed below, with the correct reponse in bold.

Installing sprinkler piping through supply air ductwork helps control bacteria growth in the sprinkler system by chilling the water in the sprinkler piping which reduces the ability of the bacteria to reproduce.

Sprinkler pipes can be used to induce turbulent air flow in supply air ducts to insure that the air stream is well mixed resulting in a uniform temperature distribution downstream at the diffusers.

Supply air ductwork can be used as a good source of cooling for the sprinkler piping since cold sprinkler system water is more effective at extinguishing fires than room temperature sprinkler system water.

It is much more cost effective to install the sprinkler piping in a single plane and through any other system components in the ceiling plenum rather than coordinate the installation of the system components in the ceiling plenum.

Penetrating ductwork with any item results in increased pressure drop in the ductwork system, reduced air flow, poor HVAC system performance and higher energy consumption. This practice should never be employed as a means to resolve conflicts between ductwork and piping or conduit.

WINNER

Congratulations to Roy Dingus, Facility Manager with the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, DC. He correctly identified the Spring installation blooper and enjoyed a $100 Shell Oil Gas Card.

Enter this season's contest at www.wnainc.com/contest.html and you could the next winner of a $100 Shell Oil Gas Card. Drawing will be held August 1, 2008.
