SUMMER 2008 INSTALLATION BLOOPER CONTEST

WIN A $100 SHELL OIL GAS CARD !!

Every season we post a photo on our website which illustrates the importance of including Construction Administration in the Engineering scope of work. Even small, seemingly unimportant installation deficiencies can cause poor system performance, increased maintenance, or reduced equipment longevity. Correctly identify the installation blooper (pictured to the left) and you are automatically entered to win a $100 Shell Oil Gas Card. Drawing will be held August 1. Past winners are eligible to win again!

The possible responses are listed below, with the correct response in bold.

Painting the pipe union and junction box with tie-die colors helps ensure easy identification from long distances under the raised floor, especially at night.

The junction box is mounted directly below the pipe union and shows stains from previous glycol solution leaks or spills. The junction box itself is not watertight, and has open mounting holes that can allow the glycol solution to soak the electrical connections. Both the junction box and piping do not have adequate clearances for proper servicing. Any glycol solution that leaks from the system should be cleaned and properly disposed of using a method approved by the local jurisdiction.

Locating the pipe on top of the junction box ensures that the junction box will not be accidentally stepped on when people work underneath the raised floor.

The close contact between the glycol piping and the junction box ensures that the junction box temperature is regulated to between 110 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the ideal temperature for movement of electrons in the wiring. This helps offset the blast of cold air from the nearby down-flow air conditioning unit.
