WINTER 2009 INSTALLATION BLOOPER CONTEST

The possible responses are listed below, with the correct reponse in bold.

Rotting wood makes an ideal material for ductwork support since it provides both support and vibration isolation for the supply air ductwork system.

Wooden sleepers are easy and economical to install and, as the wood decays, additional sleepers can be added to maintain the desired mounting height of the ductwork system.

Installing wooden supports at an angle extends the service life of the supports as it prevents water accumulation since there are no horizontal surfaces.

Because wood is not a good thermal conductor, it will not transfer heat from the ambient environment into the supply air duct and should be used instead of steel.

Proper support of ductwork and other system equipment is critical to the operation of the system and equipment. Improper support of ductwork can overstress the ductwork joints, flanges, and connections causing leaks in the system. This results in loss of system capacity, an increase in energy costs, and temperature control problems in the building.
