File and Storage Rooms larger than 100 square feet have special code requirements, such as:
- Fire-rated or smoke-rated slab-to-slab walls must surround the File
or Storage Room.
- Fire dampers must be installed in penetrations through fire-rated walls. However, penetrations in smoke-rated walls must have smoke dampers controlled by a smoke detector in the Storage Room.
- Fire-rated walls require a rated door. Smoke-rated walls do not.
- Fire and smoke dampers are only required in ductwork that is open to the File and Storage Room.
Make sure your A & E team incorporate these requirements into your design to avoid comments from the Plans Review Department.
